Cylindrical, thin end, some branches, 10 ~ 45 cm long, diameter 0.5 ~ 2 cm. Surface gray-yellow to yellow-brown, the head of the root has a number of warty protrusions of stem scars and buds, customarily known as "lion's pan head", the lower part of the root head has circular transverse lines, the whole has obvious irregular longitudinal grooves and scattered transverse long lenticels; branch roots broken off with black-brown gelatinous material, customarily known as "edamame tail ". The texture is soft and firm, slightly fissured on the cross-section, yellowish white skin, yellowish wood. The aroma is special, sweet taste.
Chemical composition
Radix Codonopsis contains volatile oil, baicalin glucoside, trace alkaloids, amino acids, polysaccharides and saponins, and contains butyroside, n-hexyl-β-D-glucopyranoside, taraxerol, uninhibited terpene and other components.
