Reed root is a traditional Chinese medicine, which comes from the fresh or dry rhizomes of the grass plant Phragmites australis. The reed root is sweet and cold in nature, and belongs to the lung and stomach channels.
The effects and functions of reed root mainly include: clearing away heat and purging fire, generating fluid to quench thirst, eliminating annoyance, stopping vomiting and diuresis. It is clinically used to treat fever and thirst, lung heat cough, lung carbuncle and purulence, stomach heat vomiting, heat drenching and astringent pain, etc. Reed root tastes sweet and cold, so it is good at clearing lung and stomach qi and separating excess heat. It also has the effect of generating fluid to quench thirst and eliminate annoyance, so it is often used for symptoms of fever hurting fluid, irritating heat and thirst, and internal heat quenching thirst. Reed root can clear away heat, diuresis and relieve drenching. It can also be used to treat short red urine, hot drenching and astringent pain. Moreover, the sweet and cold nature of reed roots can enter the stomach meridian, clear away stomach heat, stop vomiting, and do not affect the stomach. Therefore, it is also a very important drug for the treatment of stomach heat nausea. In clinical practice, reed root can be used in combination with trichosanthin, coix seed, and white grass root.
Modern pharmacological studies have also shown that reed root can protect the liver, resist calcium oxalate kidney stones, and increase the content of liver glycogen. However, it should be noted that the drug is cold. Patients with deficiency of spleen and stomach should use it carefully.
