function
The active ingredient in senna leaf is called sennoside. This component molecule is converted by microorganisms in the colon to another substance, anthrone rhein, which has beneficial effects on stimulating colon activity (which accelerates intestinal peristalsis and improves digestion) and increasing fluid secretion.
The purgative effect of sennoside and its active metabolite anthrone Rhein are thought to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolyte in the large intestine, thus increasing the volume and pressure of intestinal contents. It will stimulate the pushing contraction movement of the colon.
In addition, the stimulating effect on the secretion of active chloride increased the contents of intestinal water and electrolyte. These changes in the transport of active electrolyte depend on the calcium element on the slurry surface.
The purgative effect of sennoside is partly mediated by stimulating the secretion of colonic fluid and electrolyte, and the secretion ability is regulated by stimulating the formation of endogenous prostaglandins. Sennoside can be prepared into enema or suppository or mixed with stool softener or bulky fiber laxative to form a combined laxative.
Security
Sennoside is a powerful laxative, so it should be taken with caution and pay attention to the dosage. Especially for pregnant, menstrual or postpartum women. Because it is irritant, it should not be used in patients with gastrointestinal inflammation. This irritant effect on the intestinal mucosa may cause irritation, pain or nausea, and liquid feces or diarrhea in case of overdose.
