The potassium content of Polyporus umbellatus is not high (30 mg%) and does not dilute the blood. Its diuretic effect may be due to inhibiting the reabsorption of electrolyte and water by renal tubules. Wuqinsan Decoction (Polyporus umbellatus, Poria cocos, Atractylodes macrocephala, Alisma orientalis and cassia twig) is injected intravenously into dogs to increase the excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride ions while increasing the amount of urine. The alcohol extracted aqueous solution also has obvious diuretic effect when taken orally to rats. Among its constituent drugs, cassia twig is more significant in diuresis. Antibacterial effect the alcohol extract of Polyporus umbellatus has inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
