Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Latin name: Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi), another name for mountain tea root and Tujin tea root, is a perennial herb of Scutellaria in Labiatae; Fleshy rhizomes are plump, leaves are hard and papery, lanceolate to linear lanceolate, racemes are terminal on stems and branches, corolla purple, purplish red to blue, filaments are flat, style is slender, disk is annular, ovary is brown, nutlets are ovoid, and flowering and fruiting period is from July to September.
The root of Scutellaria baicalensis has bitter taste and cold nature. It has the effects of clearing heat and dampness, purging fire and detoxification, hemostasis, stillbirth and so on. It is mainly used to treat febrile diseases, upper respiratory tract infection, lung heat cough, damp heat yellow bile, pneumonia, dysentery, hemoptysis, red eyes, fetal movement, hypertension, carbuncle, swelling and furuncle, etc. The clinical antibacterial activity of Scutellaria baicalensis is better than that of Coptis chinensis, and it does not produce drug resistance.
